| Details | Ueno Toshogu Shrine was built in 1627 by Todo Takatora and the monk Tenkai within the grounds of Kan'ei-ji Temple to enshrine Tokugawa Ieyasu. The current shrine building was rebuilt in 1651 by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu. Having survived subsequent wars and earthquakes, it is a valuable architectural structure designated as a National Important Cultural Property, along with the Karamon Gate and the Sukibei (lattice fence). The opulent interior of the shrine, also known as the Golden Hall, features carvings of hawks and peonies, and the screen paintings by Kano Tan'yu, the shogunate's official painter, are preserved in their original state. The interior of the shrine is usually closed to the public for cultural property preservation, but it will be specially opened to 150 people for three days. |
